24. Baklava

Baklava is a famous layered dessert that looks elegant but is simple enough for most home bakers. With store-bought phyllo dough, this sweet treat is easy and convenient to prepare. Made with nuts and a touch of honey, baklava provides a satisfying bite for your dessert.

This classic dessert features crisp layers of delicate phyllo, melted butter, and a filling of ground walnuts and pistachios. Once baked, it is soaked with a fragrant honey syrup. The result is a crunchy, golden treat that is ideal for special occasions or when you want to impress guests with a homemade dessert.

Serving Size

  • Serves 12 people, with 1 slice each

Ingredients

  • 1 package phyllo dough (16 oz)
  • 2 cups walnuts
  • 1 cup pistachios
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup honey
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon lemon zest
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Preparation

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  2. Finely chop the walnuts and pistachios.
  3. Mix the nuts with cinnamon in a bowl.
  4. Brush a baking pan with some of the melted butter.
  5. Place one sheet of the phyllo dough in the pan and brush it with melted butter.
  6. Repeat until you have about 8 sheets layered on top of each other.
  7. Sprinkle some of the nut mixture on top.
  8. Continue layering 4 sheets of the phyllo and brushing with butter, then add more nut mixture at the top.
  9. Repeat until all the nuts and dough are used up, ending with a phyllo layer.
  10. Cut it into diamond or square pieces.
  11. Bake for 40 minutes, or until it turns out golden brown.
  12. While it bakes, combine the sugar, honey, water, lemon zest, and vanilla extract in a saucepan. Let it simmer for 10 minutes.
  13. Pour the cooled syrup evenly over the hot baklava when it comes out of the oven.
  14. Let the baklava cool before serving.
